Becky Ottinger started the Joshua Center for Neurological Disorders in 1996, naming it after her son, Joshua, who was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome, OCD and ADHD. She was passionate about making sure every child and family had a plan to help with behaviors and did not feel alone.

Mike Sumler met Becky Ottinger in 2002 while interviewing for the therapist job opening. Becky says she knew immediately that Mike was the right choice. Mike started working as the therapist at the Joshua Center in February 2003.

The Joshua Center for Neurological Disorders therapeutic services became so successful that Mike was unable to continue to get clients in on a regular basis, so he hired Kris Mitchell in 2011.

Becky Ottinger passed away in 2023 after fighting multiple illnesses that affected her quality of life. The Joshua Center is very much a part of Mike Sumler and Kris Mitchell and helped them build their experience with children and families with Tourette’s Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders, OCD, Anxiety Disorders, and ADHD.

Becky continues to be an inspiration for the work that Mike and Kris do at Sumler Counseling Services. As of 2025, due to financial difficulties, Joshua Center for Neurological Disorders had to close their physical office. They offer their social skills classes through the Sumler Counseling Services office at the Carondelet Medical Building and operate the Joshua Center camp from home. Mike Sumler and Kris Mitchell work at the camp every year as the Mental Health Coordinators and are still very much involved to help the Joshua Center whenever possible.
